Tuning into the rhythms of Nature

Biodynamic gardening seeks to work with all the forces of Nature. This course explores in detail how Biodynamic gardening achieves this in practice.

The course will cover:

  • The planet‘s unique position between sun and earth
  • Cosmic forces: the sun, moon and planets
  • The planting calendar, and how to use it
  • Root, leaf, flower, and fruit days - and how to use these in your gardening and cooking
  • The role of Biodynamic preparations

A tour of the Biodynamic Garden at Ryton Organic Gardens is also included.

This course is the second in a series in conjunction with the Biodynamic Association: www.biodynamic.org.uk and the Ruskin Mill Trust: www.rmt.org.

Argent College is the newest educational provision of the Ruskin Mill Trust network of schools and colleges for young people with complex learning needs. Ruskin Mill Trust hold biodynamic farming and gardening as a central pillar of its educational method, and runs its own biodynamic apprenticeship programme. Argent College welcomes visitors, and has its own café, using produce from its rooftop garden.

The course will be led by biodynamic grower and enthusiast Matthew Hayes. Matthew is currently a tutor and development manager for the new rooftop garden at Argent College in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham, and also runs his own commercial market garden in Hungary.

Matthew completed his biodynamic apprenticeship at Tablehurst Farm in 1986 , and worked as a gardener and educator since, including setting up an running an organic training farm at Szent Istvan University in Hungary, where he lived for over 20 years. Like many gardeners who get to know and use biodynamic methods, Matthew finds himself ever more convinced of the importance of the biodynamic approach, and looks forward to sharing his knowledge and experience at these workshops.
