Support a sustainable future
Leaving a legacy gift to Garden Organic
Legacies are incredibly important to us. Our organic garden at Ryton is the wonderful, attractive site it is today, in part due to legacy gifts.
Legacies have helped in all stages of our development from the earliest days. They have also helped to fund much of our project work, enabling us to teach the next generation about the benefits of organic gardening.
A legacy gift to us is an investment in an organic, sustainable future for ourselves and our planet. It helps us research, inform, support and inspire people about the organic approach.
It can also significantly reduce the amount of your estate that goes to the tax man.
Why we need your legacy gift
Your legacy gift could help us in one of many ways. Here are just a few examples:
Helping to support our Heritage Seed Library. Who knows what important elements the 850+ seeds in our seed library may have for future generations? The biodiversity of our collection has not been explored at all. Major work over several years would be required, but investigating every variety would require major investment. £1,500 would help us test and evaluate 15 vegetable varieties for possible inclusion in the the Heritage Seed Library catalogue, safeguarding these for future generations. £30,000 would provide up to date equipment in the library and outside in the growing areas.
Support people through our social and therapeutic growing projects. Our social and therapeutic growing projects deliver profound benefits. A gift of £5,000 would enable us to provide the equivalent of one day of social and therapeutic horticulture per week for a year for at least 36 young people with special educational needs.
To develop or renew one of our gardens. Each year we look at the gardens and decide which needs a major replanting or redevelopment so that we remain at the forefront of organic horticultural practice. At any time we will be working towards at least one major redevelopment. £2,000 would enable us to refresh the planting in a designated area, £20,000 would allow us to completely redevelop an area as a lasting tribute.
How can I leave a legacy to Garden Organic?
If you already have a will, and you just wish to make one change by adding a gift to us, then your solicitor can prepare what is known as a codicil. This is a simple way to add a new instruction, as described in our guidance on updating a will.
If you do not already have a will, then please see making a will for our straightforward guidance including information on inheritance tax, how to update your will and some frequently asked questions. It is strongly advised that you seek the help of a solicitor or other professional to ensure that your will meets your requirements and is legally binding.
To leave a gift to us, you need to decide what type of gift you want to make, and how you want to benefit the organisation - for our work generally or for a particular part of it.
Donations in memory
An in memoriam gift is where a person, or their family, specify that instead of flowers at the funeral service, they would prefer donations which will be given to a named charity.
We are very grateful for such thoughtful gestures, at a time of sadness, which contribute greatly to the work of Garden Organic.
You can make an in memory donation online, by calling us on 024 7621 7701, or by posting a cheque to us at Garden Organic, Wolston Lane, Coventry CV8 3LG. You can also make arrangements with your Funeral Director to collect the donations on your behalf, or create a tribute page through JustGiving and invite friends and loved ones to donate.
Please do let us know the name of who you are remembering with this gift so that we are able to show our appreciation to family and friends.
If you are considering leaving a legacy or a significant gift to Garden Organic you may want to know some more about how the organisation works first. Therefore we are offering our members the chance to see behind the scenes and meet key staff during a Supporter Day. We plan to run these every six months.
